Up to a dozen fighter planes disappeared in the late 1950s when, on the inner German border, they closed in on a UFO the size of two aircraft carriers. No wreckage was ever found.
The previously unknown case was revealed by former intelligence officer Franc Milburn in this podcast, who said he'd learned the facts from "a contact".
Here's my transcript of what he told the Unidentified Celebrity Review about the event.
"I actually looked for the records of this and I haven't found it anywhere. We're talking like 1957 1958.
There was an incident on the inner German border. The person who related this to me was.... I won't say
what he did later because I could identify him.... he was at the time working counter intelligence.
It was just after the establishment of the East German Air Force, it was about
1957- 58.
There were a number of aircraft, half a squadron, maybe six to eight eastern bloc fighters sent towards the inner
German border. I was told that the NATO forces scrambled four British Vampire jets to intercept these
six aircraft moving towards... because that was when you had Germany split down the middle, you had East Germany and West Germany so the sub block, they were trying to test the reaction time of NATO I was told that.
So you had six to eight aircraft moving from the east and then you had four British aircraft coming to meet them above the inner German border. And then I was told that from south, travelling north at a height of 30,000 feet there was a craft, it was basically a radar signature, and it was like a couple of aircraft carriers in size and it merged plot with the six to eight eastern bloc fighters and the four british fighters, and then carried on moving north at a speed of
up to 6,000 miles per hour. And the fighters just disappeared - both the eastern bloc fighters and the british fighters. I was told by my contact that there was an extensive search down on the ground, that there was no wreckage found and that they were monitoring also Soviet eastern bloc traffic that the the other side found no wreckage on the ground on their side of the border either.
And then basically the Americans and the Brits, they went around all the NATO radar sites in Germany, they
confiscated all the tapes - you know reminds us of the Nimitz no - and basically swore everybody to secrecy on pain of being caught martialed."
Milburn added: "I've tried to find out about it. I've looked up on German websites and it's completely unreported but you know it would be, because at that time you would have had limited capability as a civilian to see what was going on at 30 000 feet."
